Earlham alumni are well-prepared for post-baccalaureate education. They seek out that education on a large scale, with one in every ten Earlhamites completing doctoral studies.
Earlham is pleased that nearly 10 percent of our graduates are pursuing and completing Ph.D. programs. This demonstrates the strength of our academic curriculum and educational processes, and is proof that we are delivering an “education of the highest quality,” as our Mission Statement declares.
Earlham faculty collaborate and mentor their students, working alongside them in empirical research in the natural and social sciences and in creative endeavors in the humanities and fine arts. The quality of our faculty’s teaching as well as their disciplinary expertise and advisory influence is evident in the high numbers of Earlham graduates who complete graduate degrees.
In terms of overall doctoral productivity, Earlham ranks in the top three institutions among the members of the Great Lakes Colleges Association.
Earlham ranks 12th in the Life Sciences, 46th in Social Sciences, 51st in Business, and 58th in Humanities in the percentage of graduates who go on to receive Ph.D.s. In addition:
- Between 1992 and 2006, 10 percent of Earlham College graduates went on to earn Ph.D.s. (Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium)
- Earlham graduates are well prepared for further study: 25 percent of alumni who graduated from 1997 to 2004 received graduate degrees; 44 percent of alumni who graduated from 1997 to 2008 enrolled in graduate school. (National Student Clearinghouse)
